Route of the saint
Distance: 1.57 km
Technical difficulty: Easy
In this environment of water, stone and earth runs the Ruta del Santo, which, following the right bank of the Arnoia River, flows into the chapel dedicated to San Bartolomeu, where a pilgrimage takes place every 24 August.
The area of the hermitage is surrounded by hundred-year-old oaks that form a beautiful oak grove.
The motifs painted in this nature are diverse. From deer to tigers to eyes that observe or spheres that surround everything, the artistic intervention of Pepe Álvarez, the painter from Cartelle who filled the recreational area of Pontenova with color more than ten years ago -with ecological paint and with the consent of the City Council de Cartelle- adds intensity to an environment shaped by plant peace and the permanent cooing of water. An open-air exhibition that follows what was an old itinerary of fishermen and penetrates – starting from the end of the recreational area, where there is a swimming area and numerous tables in the shade of a large oak grove – in a landscape in which oaks , chestnuts, hazel trees and birches are reflected in the waters of the Arnoia and go out to meet the walker, as well as pieces of ethnography in the form of bridges and mills. Among dense trees you will reach the Barca area, where there is a small jetty and a swimming area.
The chapel, the end point of the journey, is located in what was an ancient fort surrounded by a beautiful outline. On August 24, the day of the pilgrimage, the residents of Vilar de Vacas take the saint in procession from the parish church to the hermitage.
