“Gato” river route
Circular: SI
Distance: 6.700 km.
Technical difficulty: High
The Gato river runs through Cartelle through a narrow and deep canyon before its confluence with the Arnoia river. Throughout its journey we can see several samples of water mills arranged on its shore. But there is a place that will call attention to us, this place is accessed by the path of the Gato River and is only accessible on foot. After crossing the narrow path known as “Mal Paso”, we will descend to the edge of the Gato. In this descent we will be able to appreciate many abandoned and unused socalcos, fruit of a great activity once in the wine and corn plantations.
We must bear in mind that this place is completely separated from civilization and its access is very difficult and difficult so we must think that this corner belonged hidden to the eyes of some. One of the reasons for this concealment was the route of smugglers that passed through this point and that was heading for Portugal. It is likely that the users of these mills had almost everything necessary to spend long periods in this place and thus remain unseen.
In the river we will see two mills called Hermenegildo and Dos Herederos. Next to the mills there is a large stone that crosses the river and was used for the passage to O Montouto.
A few meters above we can enjoy the Cascada del Río Gato, which when the river carries water becomes a good show.
